Reconnecting from Afar

If you are a Miami relative who doesn't live locally to the tribal complex, there are still a number of ways you can be involved with MNI:

  • Make sure the MNI Tribal Office has your updated contact information, including address, phone, and email, so you don't miss important tribal member mailings or emails.

  • If you can, attend one tribal event per year. MNI holds several regular events throughout the summer. In June, we host the All Nations Gathering powwow in Rockville, IN, and in August, we hold the Miami Reunion for Miami family and The Days at the Pillars, a public education weekend. These are all good places to hear our songs, meet and reconnect with your Miami family, and support our tribe.

  • Learn (and use!) Myaamia. Our language is an important part of our culture and identity, and our Language Council has some excellent resources for MNI members to begin using simple Myaamia words at home and with your Miami family.

  • Learn about the work that MNI is doing in our community, and, if you can, donate to support that work. We actively support our local community through a food bank, educational activities, land stewardship, and historical work. Learning about this work and/or donating even a few dollars connects you to our community in important ways.

  • Learn more about the history of the Miami Nation of Indiana and tell others about our people. Telling others about the Miami in Indiana—both our history and what we are doing now—reminds others that we are still here, and it deepens your own understanding of some of the issues facing MNI today.

  • Join the MNI public Facebook group, Smoke Signal, to stay up to date with what's happening at MNI and with our tribal members.
