Tribal Council
The Miami Nation of Indiana historically was governed by clans, which were families located throughout the region with distinct roles, responsibilities, and knowledge firmly rooted in their ancestral lands. Due to loss of land sovereignty and imposed US government political structures throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Miami governance shifted significantly.
Today, the Miami Nation of Indiana is governed by an 18-person tribal council composed of an elected chief, vice-chief, elected at-large representatives, and clan-appointed representatives from the families that remained in Indiana after the removal era. The secretary and treasurer are elected by the tribal council. There are tribal council meetings held every third Saturday of the month, and an in-person general meeting for all Miami citizens every third Sunday in April and October. Unless otherwise noted, meetings occur at the tribal office at 80 W 6th Street, Peru, Indiana, and are open to all tribal members.
