Miami Maiden Program
The Miami Maiden Program was created around 2002 by our Elder Women’s Council. The purpose of the program is to appoint a young lady of the Miami Nation of Indians of Indiana who the Tribe feels fully represents what it means to be a Miami of Indiana woman. The Maiden is active in the Tribe’s events and culture, and is knowledgeable of our history. They are also active in their family, school, and social life. It is a great honor for the Tribe to have these young women as our ambassadors and an honor for women to be ambassadors for our people.
Congratulations to Emyle Hobbs, the Miami Maiden for 2023!
“As Miami Maiden 2023, I would like to educate people more about the Natives. This position that I have kindly been given is meant to teach all people, especially young women. I would like to inform people about the different kinds of native dancing (that I have seen/know of).”

Meet Past Miami Maidens
Miami Nation Drum Group
The Miami Nation of Indiana Tribal Drum is the Twigh Twee. She is brought out during closed tribal functions that are explicitly spiritual and/or tribally sensitive to our culture.
Go to the contact page to book a date or event.
The Miami Nation has several drums located throughout the Tribe. There are currently four family drums and the Twigh Twee.
There are several men that give their time to participate all throughout the state and sometimes even span across to Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio.

Preserving the Language
New Language Classes to be Scheduled Soon
We are pleased to offer several language classes taught by Dr. Ashley Glassburn-Falzetti. She is Assistant Professor of Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Windsor, a tribal member, and member of the Language Committee. Visit the Events tab for future class offerings.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a current Tribe member or language, historical, or anthropology scholar/teacher, or anyone from the general public to attend. The purpose of the classes is for participants to learn about the Miami language and how to make sentences using the proper rules. We encourage all to attend as many class levels as possible.
Spots in all workshops are limited. To register, email Sarah E. (Siders) Bitzel at mnienrollment@yahoo.com, or call (765) 473-9631.
Every year the Tribal Council sponsors a week in July to allow the Miami of Indiana children to attend a language camp. They experience many activities and healthy fellowship with other children while learning the Miami language there.

Miami Nation of Indiana Longhouse
A Longhouse ceremony is the Miami equivalent to a church or faith-based fellowship in the name of the Creator. It is the Miami way to convene, worship, and fellowship. These times are sacred and each Longhouse has a specific meaning. We have certain sacred practices and ask that you respect our ways during our ceremony. Any disrespect will not be tolerated and you will be asked to leave the premises. All God’s children are invited to come, but if you are not Miami, the most respectful way to approach your desire to join us is to contact a Miami of Indiana tribe member. That way we know you are coming and we can properly escort you through the ceremony so that you can understand the spiritual aspect and fully fellowship with us.
The Miami Nation of Indiana conducts Longhouse ceremonies quarterly in FEBRUARY, MAY, AUGUST, and NOVEMBER, usually, it happens on the first weekends of those months, starting on Friday night. All Longhouse ceremonies will be posted in the Events section of this website. We ask that you check the Events, because sometimes a ceremony may be canceled due to weather or circumstances beyond our control.
We welcome you and hope that you find peace and serenity during these times. The ceremonies take place on the Miami Nation of Indiana Seven Pillars property.
