A message from Chief Brian Buchanan:
I have some exciting news for the Miami People and all Native Americans. I received confirmation today from the Governors Office that the Native American Commission of the State of Indiana has been re-instated. In today’s confirmation, I was also notified that they have appointed me to be the new Chairman for this Commission.
This is very exciting and has opportunities that the Indiana Miami may become the leaders for the State of Indiana Indian Affairs. We have the opportunity to address and make recommendations to the Governor on Native American issues and concerns. I will be meeting with the Governors office on either February 2 or 3 to meet with department heads and representatives that will sit on the Commission. Hopefully, I can develop relationships and gain the respect from these folks in order to present goals and demand results as I would imagine the Governor will expect.
I ask for support and prayers from the Indiana Miami and I, myself, pray that we will make the best decisions on behalf of the Miami Indians of the State of Indiana and ALL Native Americans living within our Great State! It is imperative that we position ourselves as being the people to bring the Native Americans together in this State and set examples of being the organizers of a great Indian Movement.
As this opportunity unfolds, the Governor’s Office has been very supportive and I speculate a great relationship with positive outcomes. I have spoken with a few Native Americans on the Commission and we have some very very important issues to make recommendations to resolve. The first will be to establish operating procedures and get those approved as soon as possible. We also have many issues to prioritize, which I will keep Council notified as it unfolds.
